Field Sketching
Field sketching is a wonderful way to creatively explore and cultivate curiosity about the natural world. Sketching in nature develops both drawing skills and observation skills as well as being a wonderful way to record your time there. It’s a part of my creative practice, and one I enjoy sharing with others.
I offer a variety of field sketching workshops:
Field Sketching Basics: An introduction to drawing from nature in the field including basic drawing from observation techniques, resources for identification and diagraming, and tips for working in the field.
Ink Wash for Field Sketching: An introduction to field sketching followed by a tutorial on an ink wash technique suitable for use outside.
Watercolor for Field Sketching: An introduction to field sketching followed by a tutorial on water color techniques for sketching individual animals, plants, and insects.
Plein-air Landscapes: An introduction to working in plein-air (i.e. painted outside) watercolor landscapes.
Nature Journaling
The practice of nature journaling cultivates wonder and develops curiosity. It’s also a wonderful way of slowing down to spend time in nature, encouraging observation, asking questions, and making connections. This is a less drawing-oriented practice than field sketching.
I offer a couple nature journaling workshops depending on the needs and interests of the group:
Introduction to Nature Journaling: An introduction to nature journaling with a range of examples followed by drawing and writing in pencil from specimens.
Writing for nature journaling: An introduction to nature journalling with a range of examples followed by a tutorial on writing from observation and on poetic writing for nature journals.
